Coronavirus – What we know about COVID-19

What is COVID-19?

Coronaviruses are spread mainly from person to person through close contact, for example, in a household, workplace, or health care centre (i.e., physiotherapy clinic). Your risk of contracting the virus may be higher if you have a weakened immune system, such as seniors and people with chronic disease (i.e., diabetes, cancer, heart, renal, chronic respiratory disease, or asthma).

COVID-19 can cause respiratory infection, pneumonia or kidney failure, however, many people may be asymptomatic or only have mild symptoms. Symptoms may include: fever, cough, difficulty breathing, muscle aches, fatigue, sore throat, headache, and runny nose. There is currently no treatment or vaccine that protects against COVID-19.

If you are returning from travel outside of Canada, you should:
  • Self-isolate for 14 days
  • Monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 for those 14 days

If you start to feel symptoms of COVID-19, you should:
  • Self-isolate immediately
  • Contact your primary care provider or Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 and they will direct you to in-person care options.
If you need immediate emergency medical attention, call 911 and mention your travel history and symptoms.
