Knee pain?! We’ve got the fix for you! A lot of the time our knees are never fully extended or straight as most activities like sitting, walking/running and even the way some of us sleep has our knee in a flexed position for a majority of the time. So what does this mean? Well our quads (the top of the thigh muscles) never get a chance to be fully at rest or relaxed-they’re constantly being pulled and stretched. This also means our hamstrings (muscles on the back of the thigh) are never getting the chance to be fully stretched, causing tightness. This puts stress on the knee joint as well as all of the tendons around the knee causing pain and an overall decrease in knee extension range of motion and strength! How do we combat this? With this simple self knee extension mobilization that also serves as a great hamstring stretch! Start by just putting your foot up on a ledge in front of you. Make sure to keep your posture neutral and your head up to not cause any strain on your back. Use your hands to push down onto your thigh until you feel a stretch in the hamstring. Picture your knee going completely straight! Hold for 5-10 seconds and repeat 3-5 times for both legs! Have knee pain? It is not uncommon to be apprehensive or avoidant with neck extension (looking up and putting your head back) especially when experiencing discomfort, tightness or arthritis in the neck. However this tends to cause an overdevelopment of certain muscles (like the traps or SCM of the patient in this picture) which will restrict movement even further, causing pain and a loss of range of motion, worsening the initial condition. Happy Monday!!🤩 We’re starting the week with some hip hinge! So what exactly is hip hinge? A hip hinge is a movement that utilizes the posterior chain—the back side of the body—to drive flexion and extension of the hips with a posterior weight shift. The musculature involved in the movement pattern includes the hamstrings and glutes, erector spinae, the rhomboids to aid in a neutral spine, and the core muscles for bracing the upper body. One of the most common mistakes is using the lower back to hinge. So when people “throw their backs out”, it’s usually because the hinge was not set up properly and the load was picked up using the lower back instead of the hip. A proper hip hinge is essential for your squats and deadlifts!! To complete the movement grab a dowel, broomstick, gold club-whatever you have lying around! Place it behind your back vertically (right hand behind neck and left hand behind small of back) with feet hip width apart. Make sure dowel is touching the back of your head, upper back, and sacrum. With knees slightly bent, shift your weight back and push hips as you begin to hinge your torso forward, making sure dowel is connected to your body at those same three points.
